How to simplify fractions
There are some different ways to simplify or reduce a fraction. Run across some examples beneath:
Method 1 - Keep Dividing by a Small Number
Showtime by dividing both the top and bottom numbers of the fraction by the same number, and repeat this if necessary until it is impossible to dissever. Brainstorm dividing by a small number like 2, 3, five, seven. For instance,
Simplify the fraction 12/sixty
- Get-go divide both (numerator/denominator) by ii to get six/30.
- Divide both of those by ii to get three/15, so,
- Separate both of those by 3 to go ane/5.
In the fraction 1/5, 1 is but divisible by itself, and five is not divisible by other numbers than itself and ane, so the fraction has been simplified as much as possible. No farther reduction is possible, and so the reply is one/5.
Method 2
To reduce a fraction to everyman terms (too called its simplest form), just separate both the numerator and denominator by the Greatest Common Factor (GCF or GCD). For example, two/iii is in lowest form, but 4/6 is not in lowest class (the GCD of four and vi is two) and four/vi can be expressed as two/iii. You can do this considering the value of a fraction is not changed if both the numerator and denominator are multiplied or divided past the same number (other than zero).
